The Bluffs was designed to make the most of life on the water – and our scenic, wooded high bluffs lead down to the lush, rolling waters of the storied Cape Fear River. There is where we continue this series. Let’s head out to experience the wonder and majesty of the enchanted ancient forest of the Three Sisters Swamp and the Black River. This excursion North from our River Park Marina is for the more experienced and adventurous paddlers offering unparalleled views of trees, thousands of years old.

Nestled in the middle of the Three Sisters Swamp, is a tree called Methuselah (BLK69 by its official name) dated to be over 2,600 years old by scientists using solid core analysis. And there are hundreds of others in the area more than 1,000 years old. The undisturbed nature of the river and the pristine water conditions have helped these trees survive for so many years.

The Black River has been designated as Outstanding Resource Waters by the North Carolina Division of Water Quality, and the Nature Conservancy has been protecting important tracts along the Black River since the ancient trees were discovered in the 1980’s. After paddling around these ancient wonders, you will leave with a newfound reverence for these enchanted ancient beings right in our backyard. With stunning views and a vast array of wildlife and scenery to take in, this day-long adventure has to be seen to be believed.
