The Bluffs was designed to make the most of life on the water – from the almost 4-acre lake alongside our Clubhouse to the Cape Fear River (our northern boundary). This mile-long stretch of scenic, wooded riverfront offers high bluffs that lead down to the lush, rolling waters of the storied Cape Fear River. In this series we look forward to introducing you to some of the winding waterways and creeks in and around the Leland area. So, get ready to get out in nature, enjoy our mild year-round climate and take in the coastal wildlife our region has to offer.

To continue this series, we are heading out for an archeological adventure on one of the Cape Fear River’s dredge islands. Sharks Tooth Island has been formed in such a way that shark teeth, fossils, bones, and even historical artifacts are all waiting to be discovered. Guaranteed to be an outing you will never forget, just head South on the Cape Fear River from our River Park Marina and you’ll make your way past Eagles Island, and just East of Campbell Island is Sharks Tooth Island. The island is also accessible from the River Road ParkPublic Water Access, located between Wilmington and Carolina Beach on River Road.

Sharks Tooth Island is best explored at low tide when there is plenty of bank surface to explore and collect on. Keep in mind that the tidal mud pools are a great spot to sift, so be sure to bring small shovels, sifters, and something to carry home all the wonderful items from the day’s collection. With all the anticipation and excitement about what you will find, keep in mind, if a large vessel or cargo ship passes by, your boat or kayak could end up down river if it not properly tethered or anchored.

Whether you are exploring for the first time, or this is your hundredth trip relishing the natural beauty of the Cape Fear area, our river-centric amenities at The Bluffs make it easy for you to choose your adventure. Fishing, birdwatching, kayaking, paddleboarding, or day-tripping…this river is ready. As you soak in the beauty of our area, you’ll understand what we mean when we say living on the water means more at The Bluffs. So, get out there and embrace river life at its best. Come discover The Bluffs in person and pick out the perfect Move-In Ready home or homesite for you, and let the adventures begin!
